SIMPLR Guide to Taking Care of Your Jewelry

No one likes sporting tarnished sterling silver, bent-out-of-shape bracelets, dull gold chains or anything else that might make your fine jewelry appear less exquisite than its true value. As a part of our Spectacular Summer Sweepstakes, we’re providing quick tips to keep your jewelry dazzling to the fullest! Make sure you enter to win a beautiful Halo Collection set here.

Let’s start with gold. The at-home basics for cleaning up that subdued shine are simple – just soak your gold jewelry in two cups of warm water with a few drops of dishwashing soap for 15 minutes, softly scrub the dirt away, rinse in warm water, and blot dry.

For silver, follow the same steps above but instead of soaking the silver, dip a cloth into the mixture and gently rub the jewelry clean. For heavier tarnish, mix a paste of three parts baking soda to one part water. Apply the cleaner with a soft, lint-free cloth (this is important to avoid scratches) to the wet silver. Work into the crevices and dents of the silver, rinse, and buff dry. Make sure not to soak silver in either of these solutions, as this adds to the tarnish.

If you’re showing off a rock of some kind, those can be made star-bright again too! Just know your hard gems and soft gems so you don’t damage the jewel.

  • Hard gems (diamonds, sapphires, rubies) – soak in equal parts ammonia and cold water for about half an hour or, if necessary, overnight.
  • Soft gems (opals, pearls, coral, turquoise) – soak in warm water mixed with a few drops of dishwashing soap, just like gold.

Sometimes taking care of jewelry doesn’t just mean cleaning; those tedious and time-consuming knots in long chains, or bent clasps that won’t stay clamped, are just as much a part of the process. For untangling, sprinkle your chains in baby powder to loosen, and use a needle or something similar to get it started.  Make sure to carefully rinse afterward.

Of course, it’s always important to keep track of your jewelry, know where you’re storing it and that it’s protected. Your jewelry should be the last thing you put on in the morning and the first thing you take off at night for best protection. Remember, exquisite jewelry is dazzling to look at, but its purpose is to make YOU all the more radiant!
