With winter weather forcing most workouts indoors, these maintenance tips can help your workout equipment stay in shape as well.
Store your weights correctly
Did you know leaving your weights on the bar can cause them to become misshapen? While rods are built steel-tough, they aren’t designed to hold weights over long periods of time. Make it a habit to remove weights after each workout and store them on a storage rack or bar stand.
This tip may seem a little obvious to most gym patrons, but is quite often overlooked when using an in-home gym. Frequently wiping down and cleaning your seats, benches, and equipment with a water-based disinfectant will keep buildup, mildew and grime away. Your mats matter, too! Whether your go-to practice is yoga or Pilates, your workout mats are crucial for a number of routines. Keep them nice and clean by spraying and wiping them down after each use.
Oil your equipment
Nothing is worse than hopping over to the next fitness set and finding corrosion. Lubricating barbells and resistance machines can prevent rusty bolts and keep your routines smooth. Most cardio machines like treadmills and ellipticals are self-lubricating, but just like your car engine oil, they need to be replenished every so often. Check your equipment’s manuals to find out how often you need to refill it and what type of oil you should be purchasing.
Bolt, wire and belt inspection
Over time, wear and tear will happen – even to your beloved machines. Occasionally check for loose screws, frayed wires and unattached belts. Be sure to tighten those bolts and keep equipment well-maintained.
More quick tips:
- Take note of the exercise equipment you use the most and keep any extra eye out for damages on those machines
- Keep disinfectant wipes in the area
- Have a repair kit handy in case of any unexpected machine problems
Consistent care throughout the year makes for a smoother transition as you head indoors for your workouts each winter. A little bit of effort goes a long way in the fitness world!
